What Procedures are Involved in Body Feminization?

Total body feminization involves several surgical procedures, each listed below. Dr. Joel Beck plans these procedures carefully, considering everything and developing a surgical plan wherein your transition moves through the different phases in the most comfortable way possible. 

The various procedures that are often required include:

Liposuction

Dr. Beck can remove persistent, hard-to-lose fat deposits in the tummy zone, back, or other areas to create a trimmer, more feminine, overall more appealing body contour. This minimally invasive procedure involves small incisions being made so that a cannula can enter, where it will break up fat and suction it out of the body. 

The amount of time you’ll need to recover from liposuction will depend on the area where you’re having fat removed. After the first few days of taking it easy and experiencing moderate pain, the discomfort will greatly subside. During recovery, you will need to wear a compression garment to help with healing. 

Liposuction patients must have good skin tone. Those with excessively sagging skin will likely require a different procedure. 

Tummy Tuck

Creating a slim, trim abdomen with a distinctly feminine look may require a tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty. This procedure addresses loose muscles, sagging skin and tissue, and fat deposits lingering at the stomach and waist. Stretched or separated muscles will also be repaired and tightened. This surgery is most often performed on patients who have lost a significant quantity of weight, whether through diet or bariatric surgery.

Most tummy tuck patients require about two weeks of recovery before returning to work. You’ll be given an abdominal compression garment to help with swelling and healing, and in addition thin, flexible tubes (drains) may be placed beneath your skin to remove excess fluid from the surgical site. These tubes will be removed in a few days. Tummy tuck patients will have to refrain from exercise for approximately six weeks after surgery.

Breast Augmentation

One of the critical aspects of body feminization is the creation of your ideal breasts. Many of our patients choose to enhance the size of their busts with breast implants. This is excellent news because now more than ever before there is a very wide variety of implant options in shape, size, and projection.  

In addition, with the assistance of the Vectra® H1 3D imaging system, you can see exactly what each implant size and shape will look like before making a decision. Factoring in issues such as shoulder width is always part of Dr. Beck’s process in helping his body feminization patients with this important part of the process. 

Returning to work after breast augmentation at 1-2 weeks is typical. At six weeks, most patients can resume exercise. During recovery, you may experience swelling, numbness, tingling, itching, and soreness — especially during the first week. We will give you a surgical bra to wear for approximately one week to help with healing. You can expect final results at 2-3 months.

Breast Implant Options

Silicone Implants

Many patients choose silicone implants because they feel and look very natural. The silicone gel within the shell has a similar weight and consistency to natural breast fat and offer the perfect “bounce”. Silicone implants may be the best choice for you because they are less prone to rippling, an issue in which the implant becomes visible under the skin when a patient has inadequate breast tissue to cover the implant.

Saline Implants

Filled with a saltwater solution after being placed within the body, saline implants require a much smaller incision than silicone implants. These implants must be very carefully placed. For some patients, it’s possible to position the implant beneath the chest muscle structure to help conceal the edges of the implant so that the possibility of rippling is limited.  

Natrelle® and Sientra® Breast Implants

Aesthetic technology is just getting better, with more and more remarkable products becoming available. Many transitioning patients choose the latest generation of implants, which are known as “gummy bear” implants. They are filled with a different type of silicone gel that mimics female breast tissue like no other, giving breasts a natural-looking rounded, plump shape no matter what position the body is in. Gummy bear implants also have the added advantage of being less likely to leak because the gel retains its shape even if the outer shell has a leak or tear. These implants come in either anatomical shapes (teardrop) that match the shape of the natural breast or a rounded shape for a fuller appearance.
