What Procedures are Involved in Masculinization?

For a truly masculine look, a customized surgical plan will be developed with you.

FTM Facial Surgery

Certain facial features signal femininity, while others are singularly masculine. FTM facial surgery can allow you to have more masculine facial features in the hairline, brows, forehead, nose, lips, jaw, chin, and facial hair. The ability to see the differences in facial structure with our Vectra® 3D imaging system makes the process very exciting because it allows you to “try on” different facial changes with digital imaging technology. What will you need? Only a personalized consultation will determine which procedures will help you achieve the masculine facial structure that creates the perfect look to reflect your vision.

TG Hair Restoration

Dr. Beck offers an advanced hair restoration technique that makes it possible to create masculine facial hair growth. Hair that can be enhanced includes the beard, eyebrows, sideburns, or a mustache. While hormone therapy does wonders in triggering the growth of facial hair, the final outcome may not be as thick and lush as you had hoped for. NeoGraft® hair restoration technology is far superior to the traditional methods of hair restoration and can allow you to have thick, masculine brows or facial hair that creates a more realistic masculine appearance.

Body Masculinization

How do you fully “masculinize” a body? Only a custom surgical plan can answer that question for you.

Various surgical procedures may be required, including top surgery to achieve an upper chest that is flat and athletic to liposuction to trim away areas of excess fat that are giving your body a female look. Dr. Beck’s goal is to provide you with a body that appears trimmer, sleeker, and more masculine. In other words, more you.

Do I need to be on testosterone before masculinization surgery?

Testosterone is not always required before masculinization surgery, though it is part of many people's transition. For top surgery in particular, hormone therapy is often not a strict requirement.

Testosterone can influence body fat distribution and facial hair, which may affect your plan and timing. Dr. Beck reviews your hormone status and goals to recommend the right sequence for you.

Will testosterone alone give me a masculine body?

Testosterone creates many masculine changes, but it cannot do everything surgery can. It deepens the voice, grows facial and body hair, and shifts fat toward a more masculine pattern over time.

What testosterone cannot do is remove breast tissue or fully reshape the chest. For that, top surgery is needed alongside hormone therapy to complete the change.

What is FTM top surgery, and what techniques are used?

FTM top surgery creates a flat, masculine chest by removing breast tissue and reshaping the area. The technique depends mainly on your chest size and skin elasticity.

  • Double incision works well for larger chests and repositions the nipples
  • Periareolar or keyhole suits smaller chests with good skin tone

Dr. Joel Beck recommends the approach that gives the most natural, masculine result for your body and confirms the plan at your consultation.

Will masculinization surgery leave scars?

Some masculinization procedures leave scars, and the amount depends on the technique. Top surgery is the main example, since removing chest tissue requires incisions.

  • Double incision leaves horizontal scars along the lower chest
  • Periareolar methods keep scars around the areola

Scars fade over time, and Dr. Beck places them to heal as discreetly as possible.

Does masculinization include bottom surgery?

No, masculinization at Beck Aesthetic Surgery focuses on the face, chest, and body contour rather than genital surgery. It includes procedures such as top surgery, facial masculinization, and liposuction.

Bottom surgery, such as phalloplasty or metoidioplasty, is performed at specialized centers. Dr. Beck can be part of your wider care team while handling the contouring parts of your transition.

Can masculinization be done in one surgery, or is it staged?

It depends on which procedures you need and your overall health. Some patients combine treatments like top surgery and liposuction in one operation, while broader plans that also include facial work are usually staged.

Staging can be the safer route when several areas are involved or the total operating time would be long. Dr. Beck builds a plan around your goals, your safety, and your recovery.

Is masculinization surgery covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your plan and the specific procedure. Top surgery is increasingly covered as medically necessary gender-affirming care, while contouring procedures are sometimes considered cosmetic.

Check your benefits directly with your insurer and ask what documentation they require. Our gender confirmation resources can help you prepare for that step.

How much does masculinization cost?

The cost of masculinization varies because it usually combines more than one procedure. Your total depends on whether you choose top surgery, facial masculinization, body contouring, or a combination.

Dr. Beck provides a personalized quote once your plan is set. Beck Aesthetic Surgery also offers financing to help make your transition more manageable.

What is recovery like after top surgery?

Recovery after top surgery is usually manageable, and most patients return to desk work within one to two weeks. You will wear a compression binder and may have small drains for the first few days.

Avoid heavy lifting and exercise for about four to six weeks so the chest can heal fully. Following your journey with Dr. Beck helps keep your recovery on track.
