NeoGraft vs. Strip Method

What is the Strip Method?

The strip method is a traditional technique for hair transplant by which hair follicles are harvested by removing a strip of your scalp. Once it’s removed, the strip is stitched back together and with the use of a microscope, it’s cut into tiny grafts for transplantation. In some cases, the strip method may be the only option for patients — such as those with extreme balding. However, this method has some drawbacks. It’s a long and grueling procedure that requires many hours to perform.  It also has a longer recovery time and the patient will be left with a linear scar afterward that is visible with any shorter haircut.

What is the NeoGraft Method?

The NeoGraft method is completely different than the strip method. Rather than taking a piece of your scalp, grafts are taken from the back of the head in 1mm punches, each of which holds from one to four follicles. This is an enhanced version of the FUE (follicular unit extraction) technique in which healthy hair follicle units are removed from the back of the head and then strategically implanted where hair growth is wanted. FUE can be performed manually, but the NeoGraft system takes this technique to another level. Manual FUE allows for about 750 grafts to be harvested in one appointment, while the NeoGraft automated system allows for up to 2,500.

    What to Expect During Your NeoGraft Treatment

    When you arrive for your FUE NeoGraft appointment, the back of your head will be shaved, if it is not already. You will be given injections to numb your head, and you will then be made comfortable lying face-down on a medical chair, and Dr. Beck will begin the procedure. The NeoGraft’s handheld device will be used to make tiny, circular incisions in the scalp to remove the hair follicles. 

    The device is essentially a tiny tube with a sharp edge to “punch into” the scalp. The device also has a suction tube connected that helps pull the grafts out. Once the units have been removed and prepared for transplant, Dr. Beck will use a fine, needle-point instrument to create tiny recipient sites in the areas where hair growth is needed. She will immediately graft the hair follicles into these areas in a natural-looking pattern. The placed hair follicles can now become healthy, hair-producing follicles. After this, your head will then be dressed with surgical gauze or dressings.

    After the Procedure

    There is very little downtime and recovery involved with NeoGraft. You may have a headache for a day or so, as well as slight swelling at the injection sites. The majority of patients return to their normal daily routine within three to five days. 

    • Seven to ten days: The incisions made on your scalp will be healed by now, so you can go back to your regular hair products.
    • One to five weeks: The implanted hairs will start shedding because your hair will begin a new growth phase.
